IMAP offers true two-way synchronization between the client and server, so that when you delete a message on the client, the message also gets deleted from the server. Only Gmail offers IMAP to its users. IMAP is especially useful if you want to check your inbox from many different clients, such as from Outlook, your mobile phone, and the internet. Without IMAP synchronization, doing this just creates havoc within your various inboxes. As a result, Gmail is one of the fastest growing email services on the web. Yahoo Mail only offers POP for a fee, and does not offer IMAP at all.
